I frowned. "But I would much rather be traveling and sailing all over the world rather than coming back here." I told her before pulling her up. "Are you ready to go?" I knew it was time for the luncheon and we would be punished for being late.

"Yes, I suppose we should go now. If we have to..." I said, glancing at myself one last time in the mirror before leaving the room with Olivia. Maybe tonight I would be lucky and James would ask me to dance with him tonight, or at least notice me. "Actually, I'm a little bit excited tonight. It might be fun, yes?"

I smiled and linked arms with her. "I think it could be. Maybe you'll even get a dance with the Commodore today." I said with a wink as we walked. We met with our family and took a carriage with them to Lord Beckett's new home. It was a much grander home than our own and very modern. I know it was built specifically for him so the house reflected him, I was sure. We walked into the house and were led into a large ballroom with table after table of delectable looking food he had prepared for his guests. I noticed a short man with a white parlor wig talking to the Govenor. I figured he must be Lord Cutler Beckett.

I was amazed at the size of the house our carriage pulled up to, and I couldn't stop staring at everything around us as we were led to the ballroom. "How can someone be this rich? Or comfortable in a home this grand?" I whispered to my sister before looking around to try and find James. I noticed a short man talking to the Governor. "He looks like a kid, does he not? He's so tiny!" I giggled, pointing to him.

I was as amazed as her and giggled when she whispered. "I would be more than comfortable living like this. This is incredible. Maybe I should marry a lord." I teased and wrinkled my nose. "Not him though. There's not enough money in the world that would convince me to marry him." I grabbed her hand so she wouldn't be seen pointing and laughing at such a powerful man--however small he may be. Father brought us over and introduced us all. Grace and I curtsied and he kissed our hands. He seemed even shorter up close.

I almost felt bad for the man, being so short this late in his life, but I supposed the money and power he had would make up for his stature. I wondered if he was married, and if so, where she would be in the room, to see if she was any shorter than he was. I was about his height in my heels, and I found it amusing that I found a man that was only a few inches taller than I was. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Lord Beckett." I said, trying to be as polite as I could.

I noticed a sparkle in Lord Beckett's eyes as he looked at my sister. He seemed very interested in her, but I was sure Grace didn't feel the same. I could tell she was trying very hard not to look in Commodore Norrington's direction at the moment. "The pleasure is all mine." Lord Beckett replied with a smirk on his face. After excusing ourselves, I pulled my sister away from him. "He fancies you." I said pinching her arm. "Too bad your attention is elsewhere." I added, glancing over at James who was standing beside the Govenor. He didn't look pleased. I followed his gaze to Elizabeth and rolled my eyes. I didn't understand what the big deal about her was. She wasn't that attractive.

I pulled a disgusted face when Olivia mentioned Beckett liking me. "Oh, of all the people! Just hope father doesn't find out, or else he might make something of it." I pouted, and looked over at James. He looked positively handsome tonight, although he always looked like that to me. I also rolled my eyes at Elizabeth. "I think I'm prettier than Elizabeth, if I can say that. Why is his attention always on her?" I asked, turning back to my sister. I wanted to go up to James and say hello, get his mind off of Elizabeth and get him talking to me, knowing I exist, but I wasn't brave enough to.

I chuckled, knowing that's exactly what our father would do if he found out. As I glanced back at Beckett and saw him talking to father, I decided that I needed to take matters into my hands. "Come with me." I said, taking my sister's arm and dragging her over to James. "Don't argue unless you want to marry Lord Short-man." I added before smiling up at James. "Why hello, Commodore Norrington. How are you this evening?" I asked him politely and he gave us a kind smile.

I didn't like the fact father was talking to Beckett, and as usual my imagination took off and to me they were already planning where to have the wedding and who would all be there. I wanted to run away as soon as I figured out where Olivia was taking me. "Oh, you troll, you would!" I whispered and felt myself blushing heavily when he smiled down at us. I really loved his smile... "H...hello, Commodore." I said, not wanting to say anything else for fear I would say something stupid.

"Commodore?" I started and he stopped me. "Please, we've known each other for years. Call me James." He said and I glanced at Grace to see the blush on her face that I knew would be there. "James, then. Do you think you could do me a favor tonight?" I asked him, trying to sound innocent. I knew Grace would kill me for this but if my plan works she would never stop thanking me. "And what might that be?" He responded, curiously. "Would you honor my dear sister with a dance? The only man to have asked her so far always steps on her feet. I was hoping she would have a chance with someone more graceful, such as yourself." I said and held my sister's arm tightly to keep her from running. He merely smirked. "I would be honored to dance with your sister. Miss. Wellington?" He held his arm out to her and I pushed her back slightly so she would take it.

Call him James? Would that even be right, considering we are nothing more than acquaintances? Even though he told us it was okay? I wanted to smack my sister right there, not caring that James was there. But, she did get me a dance... I looked back at her after she pushed me and gave her a nasty look that quickly turned into a smile as I turned around and took his arm. "Th...thank you, Com... James. I apologize for my sister's forwardness." I said loudly enough for her to hear as we passed her, but I smiled at her to let her know I wasn't upset. "I am sure you have more important matters to attend to tonight than dancing with me."

*James pov*
I chuckled at Grace who seemed shy and embaressed. "I have nothing of the sort. And I rather like the occasional dance or two." I commented as I swayed across the dance floor with her. There were only a few more couples dancing, including Mr. Turner and his bride to be. I ignored them however and turned my attention to my dance. She was beautiful, anyone would be stupid not to notice. I wasn't sure how she hadn't caught my attention before, but she definetly had it now. "Have you met Lord Beckett yet? I saw him talking to your father." I mentioned, trying to keep conversation flowing.

I was almost too nervous to reply to him; I was too focused on dancing and not stepping on his feet or falling. "I have. He is..." I said, and had to think about what to say. Short? No, that would not be right to say no matter how true it was. "Not as I imagined him to be, when my father spoke of him earlier. I suppose you have talked to him already?" I said. I was blanking on what I should say, I just was so nervous I couldn't think right.

I resisted the urge to chuckle as she shrugged for the words to describe Lord Beckett. "Yes, I've spoken to him frequently. He and I are working together quite often." I said, trying to keep the annoyance out of my voice. I wasn't exactly fond of the man. He was rude, power hungry, and seemed to have a manipulative personality. It was hard to describe but something about him irked me. I glanced at him now and saw him watching us with disapproval. "It seems he has taken a liking to you." I commented, glancing down at her. The thought only made me more interested in her. If I could take something he wanted, that would make my day.
