This wasn't the crowd I was used to, but I suppose it would be the crowd I would have to get used to. Leaving the companion's guild was hard enough for me to do; I had to leave a lot of my friends behind, and not to mention a lot of good looking men, too. But I couldn't live like that anymore, not with how my father treated me for it. I couldn't wrap my mind around how he talked to me, when it was his idea in the first place to send me for schooling when I was a child; my mother was the reluctant one.
I was used to beautiful people with manners being around me all day, but wandering the docks now, I felt out of place. And the people, well... they weren't so nice. A few had bumped into me and looked at me as if it was my fault, but I held my tongue. I didn't need to draw any attention to myself, not until I was far away from my old life. Which is why I was looking for a ship currently, something nice looking, not too big, to take me away from Persephone. From here, I didn't care where I went, as long as there was some sort of civilization, preferably with polite people.
Too many of the ships had questionable looking people surrounding them, men that looked at me as if I was a prize, which I'm sure many of my clients were thinking, as well. I didn't care so much then, but now... now, I was offended. My life wasn't like that anymore, and I didn't want to be around men who saw me for my beauty only. There was a ship with a smiling girl sitting by it, and I walked up to her, wondering where they were headed.

"watch where you're going!" A man shouted in my face as I accidently bumped into his shoulder. His breath smelled of alcohol and fish. His clothes smelled of urine. He was absolutely revolting. I couldn't help the glare that set on my face and was thankful when Hobbs dragged me away, his hand on his gun just in case. He was my savior and I loved him for that. Not in any romantic way. More of like a father figure or a brother or something. He was much older than me and had been watching over me my whole life.
That's something he continued to do as we went into hiding. My parents were killed just days ago and we'd been on the move ever since, always looking over our shoulders. He seemed sure whoever killed my parents was after me as well.
We were on the docks now though and were looking for a ship to get us off this planet. I complained about the state of the ships and he told me not to be picky. We were hiding amongst the commoners now to keep ourselves out of sight of the murderer. He said this was necessary until whoever he or she was is found. I kept my mouth shut then. I rather liked keeping my life.
I looked at all the ships and glared at the captains that were leering at me. I finally found one ship with a woman present. She was talking and smiling at another woman who seemed to be interested in the ship. I looked it over and saw the name: Serenity.
"That one. We're riding on that one." I said and tugged Hobbs' arm over to the two women. "Excuse me? I'd like to board your ship if you don't mind." I clutched my bag, full of money, against my side. I took as much from the safe as I could manage before we left. It was a good thing I did, too.

The girl that was sitting by the ship was rambling on about her. The only thing I could remember about it was it was called Serenity and she was one of the best ships I could ever travel on. She got in to the technical things and I tuned her out. I didn't care so much about that, just as long as the ship could get me far away from my old life.
I was ready to tell her I wasn't interested in the details, that I could pay and would hope that would make her be quiet, when someone else walked up and spoke. I turned around and saw a woman standing there with a man, and wondered why they were leaving. I wouldn't be nosy and ask, but if I ever talked to my clients about their lives I was always interested in their stories. I guess that's why I didn't make a very good Companion; I would rather talk than do anything else.
"Shiny!" The girl said, and stood up to look at us. "As long as you can pay, Boros awaits!" She said, and I smiled back at the two behind me before walking on the ship. Great, Boros... just what I needed, a planet filled with Alliance. I was worried someone would recognize me there.

I listened to the woman talk. She introduced herself as Kaylee and she seemed nice enough. Too nice even. I nodded as she asked if we could pay. I wasn't supposed to talk, however. Hobbs said he'd take care of everything. I stepped back a bit and let him take over.
"Don' worry lass. We can pay our fare." He explained, winking at her with that damn charm of his. Kaylee blushed the slightest bit and smiled in return.
"Alright then. Come on aboard. We should be setting off soon." She said, that bright happy look on her face. I think I'll stay away from her...she was too happy for my liking. What was there to be happy about? Maybe I was just sour because of just losing my parents but I didn't understand the need to be all smiley.

I kind of liked the girl, when she wasn't rambling on about things I didn't understand. Sure, she was probably hiding something about the ship or the crew behind all that smiling and bubbly personality, but I tried not to think about that. She was probably sitting there because she was so nice. If the rest of the crew wasn't, I think I would be sticking around Kaylee until I got off.
I wondered about the other two, as well. Why didn't the girl talk? Was she mute? Or was she married to the man and he wouldn't let her talk? I shuddered at the thought of getting married just to have my husband take control over everything. I guess it was a good thing I wasn't marrying type.
"Hi, how are you?" I asked the two that boarded with me, trying to start some friendly conversation. If we were going to be traveling together,, we should at least be on civil terms.

I set my things down in the cargo bay and glanced around. The ship was dirty and ugly. It wasn't the place I wanted to be at all. But they were cheap and easy to stay to myself. I watched as Hobbs put the rest of our bags down. We had to travel light, unfortunately.
I looked up then as I heard a woman's voice. It was the other woman that had boarded. She seemed decent enough but I didn't want to get too close to anyone. I glanced at Hobbs who gave a brief nod, as if saying it was ok for me to talk to her. He would take care of it if it went ugly.
"Hello," I responded and brushed my hair behind my ear. "I'm..fine. How are you?" I asked and Hobbs chuckled at my terrible social skills. I rolled my eyes at him. "I'm Delilah, by the way." I added, nodding my head to her in introduction.

I watched the exchange between the two and felt sorry for the girl, having to ask him for permission before talking. I put the two bags down that I had brought with me, filled with some perfumes and lotions I liked too much to leave behind, mixed in with a couple of my prettier dresses that I probably shouldn't be carrying; they would tell anyone with half a brain about what I did. But, I liked them and figured no one would go through my bags, anyway. The other bags were filled with more common, not as pretty dresses and a few other outfits.
"I suppose I'm doing alright. I will be better once we are off this planet... I'm Avalon, it's nice to meet you. Is this your husband?" I asked. I didn't mean to ask right away, but I couldn't stop my curiosity. I smiled at the two of them, looking back and forth between them. Even if my days as being a companion were behind me, the man was good looking and I couldn't help myself but thinking about having one more meeting before giving up the life for good.

I smiled as she introduced herself but my smile dropped as she asked about Hobbs. I had to resist the urge to scream "No!" at her for even considering such a notion. He merely chuckled again and held out his hand to her.
"Nah, I'm just an old family friend." He said, winking at the poor girl who was probably swooning over him already. He had that affect on the ladies, although I could never really see why. Besides....he was so old. I began looking around a bit again while he conversed with her. He was trying to distract her attention so she wouldn't talk to me much.
"It's a pleasure to meet ya lass. I'm Jacob Hobbs. You can call me Hobbs if ye like. E'eryone does." He said in his Irish accent. It was a soothing tone to listen to. Maybe that's how he had so many woman falling at his feet everytime he opened his mouth.

I smiled a bit too wide when he mentioned they weren't married. This was so unlike me, usually I could compose myself... but that accent... I had never heard it before. If I did, I hadn't been paying attention. And his eyes... I gave an awkward cough, an excuse to look away for a minute to get myself together.
"Hobbs, then. It's a pleasure to meet you." I said as I took his hand, shaking it lightly. "What's the reason for travel, if you don't mind me asking." I added. I had my story all planned out in case he asked in return, I just hoped I would be able to keep it the same to everyone who asked me.

Hobbs smirked at her and pulled her hand to his lips, kissing it gently. She seemed into him already and I was already bored of it all. I wondered if he really took it that far with all the women that wanted him. I would never ask though. I doubted I wanted to know. I froze when she asked about our travels and glanced at Hobbs, curious for his response.
"Delilah recently lost her parents in a tragic accident," Hobbs began in a low tone as if it were supposed to be kept a secret from me. "I'm taking her to travel the verse in order to keep her mind off things." He explained and I looked at him in wonder. We never talked about a back story. I was a little surprised at how composed and prepared he had been. He almost had me fooled.

I blushed and looked away slowly, to let him know I was interested, but was going to be modest about it. Some of my clients were like him, acting kind and the perfect gentleman. Most of those men got blacklisted by me, as they ended up being the complete opposites. I wasn't sure how long this mad and I would be traveling together, but if I played my cards right, found out if he would continue to be a gentleman to turn worse, something could happen. In fact, I was counting on my charming ways to make it so.
I frowned immediately when hearing the girl's story, and felt bad for her. She didn't seem too young, old enough to get by, which made me wonder why a family friend was traveling with her. "I'm so sorry." I said to Delilah, giving her a sad smile. "Traveling would be good for that, yes. Any thoughts on where to take her? I know some of the core planets would have attractions to make her smile."
